request an appointmentWhat is rosacea?
Rosacea is a fairly common skin condition that causes flushing of the skin of the face. Usually, you see rosacea on the cheeks, nose, and forehead, but it can appear anywhere.
Rosacea tends to flare up in cycles. You may have periods of red, inflamed skin for weeks at a time before symptoms resolve for a while.
What are the types of rosacea?
Rosacea can manifest in different ways. These are the primary versions:
Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR)
ETR is the version of rosacea that’s most common and causes facial flushing, redness, and visible blood vessels on the face.
Papulopustular rosacea
Papulopustular rosacea resembles acne breakouts. You experience the development of tiny bumps and redness all over the skin on your face.
Ocular rosacea
Ocular rosacea appears in the eyes. You have chronically red, itchy, irritated eyes.
Rhinophyma
This rare form of rosacea causes the skin on the nose to thicken and become bulbous. It most often affects middle-aged men.
Telangiectasia
Also known as broken blood vessels, telangiectasia can occur when blood vessels are damaged beneath the skin, resulting in redness. IPL** is a safe and effective way to treat these broken blood vessels.
What causes rosacea?
The exact cause of rosacea isn’t fully understood, but it’s thought to be linked to genetics and the environment.
Many people find certain triggers cause a flare-up of rosacea. These include:
- Alcohol
- Hot tea or coffee
- Spicy food
- Demodex (skin mites)
- Sun exposure
- Exercise
- Certain medications
Triggers are different for each person. The team at Rejuvenate Skin & Wellness Center can help you discover your personal triggers so you can avoid them and minimize rosacea outbreaks.
How is rosacea treated?
There is no cure for rosacea, but the symptoms can be managed with lifestyle approaches and cosmetic and medical interventions. At Rejuvenate Skin & Wellness Center, the expert staff applies intense pulsed light (IPL**) treatments using an IPL Platinum machine. This treatment uses varying wavelengths of light to target pigment in your blood vessels and soothe redness, visible blood vessels, and acne-like bumps. IPL treatment for rosacea is safe and can be very effective.
The doctors can also recommend quality skin care products to soothe inflammations of rosacea.
